Hunter Valley long weekends: how to plan a wine-tasting day when the roads are busy

A long weekend in the Hunter brings double demerits, school-holiday crowds and the same strict alcohol limits as any other day, so the tasting plan that holds up is the one where nobody in your group has to drive.

Why the Christmas break needs more planning than Labour Day

Labour Day weekend, 2 to 5 October, is behind us, and it was a useful rehearsal. The next stretch is much longer.

The Christmas and New Year double-demerit period runs from 12:00am Thursday 24 December 2026 to 11:59pm Sunday 3 January 2027, according to the NSW Government's demerit points page. The Labour Day period ran from 12:00am Friday 2 October to 11:59pm Monday 5 October 2026. If you count both end days, that is 11 days against four, so the summer period is nearly three times as long. That is our estimate, counted from the two published periods.

All 11 days fall inside the summer school holidays, which run Friday 18 December 2026 to Wednesday 27 January 2027 for the Eastern division, per NSW school holidays. By our count they also take in four public holidays, listed on the NSW public holidays page: Christmas Day on Friday 25 December, Boxing Day on Saturday 26 December, an Additional Day on Monday 28 December, and New Year's Day on Friday 1 January 2027.

So the order of planning matters. On a Hunter long weekend, settle who is driving before you settle which cellar doors to visit.

What the Labour Day weekend showed about long weekends

Three things stacked up on one weekend. Labour Day fell on Monday 5 October 2026, in the middle of spring school holidays that ran from Monday 28 September to Friday 9 October. Double demerits switched on at midnight on the Friday.

Daylight saving then began at 2am on Sunday 4 October, when clocks moved forward to 3am. By our working, that made the Sunday of the long weekend a 23-hour day, which is easy to forget when you set a pickup time.

A long weekend does not switch the road rules off. Double demerits are switched on, and they apply to speeding, mobile phone, seatbelt and child restraint, and motorcycle helmet offences, according to the Double Demerit Points page.

The same weekend comes around again next year. Labour Day 2027 is Monday 4 October.

Can the driver taste wine at all?

Barely, and the official advice is not to. The NSW Government's alcohol and drugs page says a driver on a full licence must stay under 0.05, and that includes fully licensed interstate and overseas drivers. L, P1 and P2 drivers must be at zero.

Police can breath-test any driver at any time, and you cannot refuse. The same page says drivers cannot reliably estimate their own blood alcohol, and that "the only way to be sure you're under the limit is to not drink alcohol at all".

Who is driving home? On a full licence, including fully licensed interstate and overseas drivers: under 0.05. On an L, P1 or P2 licence: zero. On a tasting day, a self-drive group is left with two honest options. One person doesn't taste. Or the driving goes to someone whose job it is.

The second option is what HV Tours is for. We have run wine tasting tours through Pokolbin, Lovedale and Cessnock since 2015, as small-group, private, couples and wheelchair-accessible tours. If your group is weighing it up, start with our guide to booking private wine tours in the Hunter Valley.

What daylight saving changes for a tasting day

It gives you a longer evening, through to the end of summer. Daylight saving ends at 3am AEDT on Sunday 4 April 2027, when clocks go back to 2am.

NSW, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT observe it, while Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory do not. If you are driving down from Queensland, that means NSW clocks run an hour ahead of home until April. Check your phone has switched over before you agree a pickup time.

The longer evening matters most if you want to pair a daytime tasting with something after dark. The Christmas Lights Spectacular at Hunter Valley Gardens runs from Friday 30 October 2026 to Sunday 31 January 2027. The day and night are separate sessions:

  • The Gardens are open by day from 9am to 4:30pm, and everyone must leave by 4:30pm, Day/Night ticket holders included.
  • The lights run from 5:30pm to 10:30pm, with last entry at 9:30pm.
  • Tickets are valid only for the session you booked, and the event is closed on 25 December.
  • Rides are $6 each, or 6 for $30.

By our working, that leaves one hour between the day exit and the lights coming on, which is enough for an early dinner. Bringing your own food into the Gardens is not an option: their general FAQ says no picnics, food or drinks may be brought in other than sealed bottled water.

Planning for a mixed group: kids, grandparents and wheelchair users

Both stretches this season fall in school holidays, so long-weekend groups often span three generations. That changes the plan more than the wine list does.

If the Gardens are on the itinerary, the access rules on their Spring School Holidays FAQs are worth knowing:

  • There is no wheelchair hire, so bring your own.
  • Paths are crushed granite, and the Italian Grotto and Waterfall Lookout have stairs.
  • Registered guide dogs are allowed, but pets are not.
  • Parking is free, with limited disabled spaces that need a permit displayed.

The Companion Card works differently at night. The Christmas Lights Spectacular FAQs say it is accepted: you can book a companion ticket online, and documentation is required at entry. Carers who show a Companion Card at the rides booth get the same ride pass as their client or child for free.

Most of the other rules above were published for the spring program, so check the Christmas Lights Spectacular page before a night visit.

Hunter Valley Gardens access, as listed in the spring FAQ

For the tasting part of the day, ask each venue about children and about anything your group needs, from seating to step-free entry. Accessibility is where HV Tours puts its effort, with a hydraulic-lift minibus and venues we have vetted for access. Our pages on accessible wine tours and family-friendly wine experiences set out how a mixed group can share one day.

The Christmas and New Year long weekends: what to check before you book

The dates are set:

  • Christmas Day is Friday 25 December 2026, Boxing Day is Saturday 26 December, and Monday 28 December is an Additional Day, which NSW lists because Boxing Day falls on a weekend.
  • New Year's Day is Friday 1 January 2027.
  • Double demerits run from 12:00am Thursday 24 December 2026 to 11:59pm Sunday 3 January 2027.
  • Australia Day is Tuesday 26 January 2027, one day before the summer school holidays end.

That gives you two practical rules. First, book the transport before you book the dinner, because a tasting day only works once the driving is settled. Second, if your group includes anyone on an L, P1 or P2 licence, remember their limit is zero, holiday or not.
