Christmas lights in the Hunter Valley: a tasting day that finishes under the lights

Spend the daylight at cellar doors and buy Night entry for the lights, because Hunter Valley Gardens closes at 4:30pm for every visitor, Day/Night ticket holders included, and opens the lights at 5:30pm.

If your plan is cellar doors by day and Christmas lights by night, buy Night entry and spend the daylight at a tasting. The Christmas Lights Spectacular FAQs give the reason: last day entry is 3:30pm, the Gardens close at 4:30pm and the lights open at 5:30pm. Taste until mid-afternoon and the day half of a Day/Night ticket gives you an hour in the Gardens at most.

That hour costs extra. The same Christmas Lights Spectacular FAQs list Night entry at $42 per adult and $128 for a family of two adults and two children, against $60 and $195 for Day/Night (checked October 2026). By our working, the day session adds $18 per adult ($60 minus $42) and $67 per family ($195 minus $128), based on those listed prices (checked October 2026).

The season runs from Friday 30 October 2026 to Sunday 31 January 2027, and the Gardens are closed on 25 December, day and night, per the Christmas Lights Spectacular FAQs and the Visit NSW listing. Here at HV Tours, we'd rather you spent those daylight hours with a glass in hand than a map. Below is how the day and the night fit together, who should drive, and what to know about access, food and rain. For the lights themselves, our Christmas Lights in the Hunter Valley guide covers the event in general.

Everyone leaves the Gardens at 4:30pm

The day session runs 9am to 4:30pm with last entry at 3:30pm. The lights run 5:30pm to 10:30pm with last entry at 9:30pm. Both sets of times come from the Christmas Lights Spectacular FAQs.

Between those sessions the Gardens empty out. A Day/Night ticket isn't an all-day pass. All visitors must leave the Gardens by 4:30pm, and the night session opens only the lit areas from 5:30pm, as the Christmas Lights Spectacular FAQs set out.

That one-hour gap shapes the whole day. A workable outline, and this is our suggestion rather than anyone's rule:

  • cellar doors from late morning to mid-afternoon
  • a break for a rest or an early meal
  • the Gardens from 5:30pm

If you're staying over, our accommodation partners page is a place to start. For pacing the tasting itself, see the best time of day for wine tours.

There are new displays this season too. The Gardens' Christmas Lights Spectacular page lists Celestial Snowfields, Gingerbread Way and an expanded Planes, Trains & Automobiles display.

Only if you want the Gardens by daylight. A Christmas Lights ticket is for the night session and covers specific lit areas, and the rest of the Garden is closed at night, per the Christmas Lights Spectacular FAQs.

Daylight brings plenty: the Rose Garden holds over 6,000 roses, with about 35,000 bushes across the Gardens. But that is a Gardens day, not a tasting day. Our view is simple:

  • Tasting day: buy Night entry.
  • Gardens day: buy Day/Night.

Children. Child tickets (4 to 15) are $31 for Night entry and $48 for Day/Night, according to the Christmas Lights Spectacular FAQs (checked October 2026). Under-4s are free but still need a ticket. The same page lists other family combinations and an extra-child price.

Rides. Rides are $6 each or $30 for six, bought at the rides booth, per the Christmas Lights Spectacular FAQs (checked October 2026). By our working, the six-ride pass saves $6 over six single rides (checked October 2026), but only if you use all six.

Groups. Group rates apply to 12 or more adults and must be booked in advance, per the Christmas Lights Spectacular FAQs.

Bringing children along on the tasting side as well? Our family-friendly wine experiences guide covers how that works.

What time should I arrive?

Night arrival checklist

Early, and with at least two hours to spare. The Gardens recommend allowing at least 2 hours for a meal, rides and the display, and arriving early, in their Christmas Lights Spectacular FAQs.

The night has its own clock, all from the Christmas Lights Spectacular FAQs:

  • Lights open at 5:30pm.
  • Rides run 6pm to 10pm.
  • The ride booth closes at 9:30pm, and the last ride is at 9:45pm.
  • Last entry is 9:30pm.

To fit the Gardens' two hours before the rides stop, our estimate is that you want to be through the gate by about 7:45pm.

Parking is free, but the closest car park fills quickly. Overflow parking is on the oval and in the Aqua Golf car park, per the Christmas Lights Spectacular FAQs.

Santa photos run 5:30pm to 10pm from 30 October to 26 December, from $42.50 and delivered digitally, according to the Christmas Lights Spectacular FAQs (checked October 2026).

Plan dinner around the gap, because the Gardens' café shuts before it. The Garden Terrace Café does takeaway with limited seating from 9am to 3pm. Food stalls and The Evergreen Tavern bar open in the event area from 5:30pm to 10pm. Both details are in the Christmas Lights Spectacular FAQs.

Don't pack a picnic. Outside food and picnics are not allowed, and neither are alcohol or soft drinks. Sealed bottled water is fine, per the Christmas Lights Spectacular FAQs.

If food is half the reason you're coming, our Full Day Wine and Food Experience page shows how a food-led tasting day looks.

Who drives home after a day of tasting?

Public passenger vehicles, including buses and rideshareUnder 0.02

You can't reliably estimate your own BAC.

Not the person who tasted. The NSW Government's alcohol and drugs page sets the full-licence limit at under 0.05 BAC. It is zero for L, P1 and P2 licences. Public passenger vehicles, including buses and rideshare, are held to under 0.02.

The same alcohol and drugs page says you can't reliably estimate your own BAC. It adds that the only way to be sure is not to drink.

Put the day together and the problem is plain. You have a morning and afternoon of tastings. You have a few hours on your feet at 2090 Broke Road, Pokolbin. Then you have a drive home that can start after 10pm.

HV Tours runs small group, private and couples wine tasting tours through Pokolbin, Lovedale and Cessnock, so nobody in your group has to count glasses. Our guide to booking a private wine tour explains how that works. Tell us about your lights night when you enquire, and we can talk through how the day fits around it.

Is it wheelchair accessible?

Access checklist for the night session

Mostly, with a few exceptions to plan around. These details come from the Christmas Lights Spectacular FAQs:

  • Paths. There are over 8km of crushed-granite paths, and most areas suit wheelchairs.
  • Stairs. Some lookouts and the Italian Grotto have stairs.
  • Wet weather. Rain can make surfaces uneven.
  • Wheelchairs. None are available for hire, so bring your own.
  • Companion Card. It is accepted. You can book a companion ticket online, and documentation is required at entry. At the rides booth, carers who show a Companion Card get the same ride pass as their client or child for free.
  • Ferris Wheel. It has a wheelchair-accessible gondola for one wheelchair user and a carer.
  • Parking. Disabled parking is limited and needs a permit displayed.

Remember that night tickets cover the lit areas only. Check the FAQ before you build an evening around a particular corner of the Gardens.

The tasting side of the day matters as much. HV Tours runs wheelchair-accessible tours in a minibus with a hydraulic lift, visiting vetted venues. Our accessible wine tours page and our guide for seniors and guests with mobility needs cover the details.

What if it rains?

Decision flow for rain on your night: the event continues and closes only if conditions are judged dangerous; want a different night, request an exchange at least 24 hours ahead, subject to availability; severe-weather closure, date change or gift card. The lights go on in the rain. These rules are from the Christmas Lights Spectacular FAQs:

  • The event continues. It closes only if conditions are judged dangerous.
  • Changing your night. You can exchange tickets for another day, subject to availability, if you ask at least 24 hours ahead.
  • Severe-weather closure. Ticket holders are offered a date change or a gift card.
  • Refunds. These are given only if the Gardens do not open on your booked date.

The 24-hour rule is the one to watch. If the forecast turns, decide the day before, not at the gate.

Planning your lights day with HV Tours

The pieces are simple once they're laid out. Taste by day. Leave the Gardens' daylight to another trip. Be through the gate early enough for two hours under the lights. Let someone else drive.

HV Tours has run wine tasting tours through Pokolbin, Lovedale and Cessnock since 2015, and won at the 2024 Hunter Local Business Awards. If a tasting day before the lights suits your group, call us on 0456 737 888, email info@hvtours.com.au, or send an enquiry through our contact page. Tell us the night you have in mind and who's coming, including anyone who uses a wheelchair, and we'll talk through the options.
