Your Ship Just Docked. Now What?

Newcastle Harbour is one of those port stops where the temptation is to walk into the city, grab a coffee, and call it a day. Nothing wrong with that. But if your ship is in port for six hours or more, the Hunter Valley is right on your doorstep and a guided wine tour is one of the best ways to spend a shore day on the entire east coast.

The Hunter Valley is roughly 50 minutes from the cruise berth at Carrington. HV Tours picks you up directly from the port, handles all the driving, and has you back well before your departure time. No rental car, no maps, no one in your group missing out because they drew the short straw and stayed sober.

Why the Hunter Valley Is Worth a Shore Day

Newcastle doesn’t get the same tourist attention as Sydney, but that works in your favour. You’re stepping off into one of Australia’s oldest wine regions without the crowds that follow you everywhere in the city.

The Hunter Valley has more than 150 wineries, and it’s been producing wine since the 1820s. The region is best known for its Semillon -a white wine style that’s genuinely different here to anywhere else in the world -and its Shiraz. Both are worth tasting properly, at the source, rather than picking up a bottle at the airport.

What makes the Hunter Valley work as a shore day is the pace. You’re not rushing between landmarks or ticking off a checklist of sights. You’re sitting down at small cellar doors, tasting wines with the people who made them, and having a long lunch in vineyard country. That’s a good day.

How the Day Works from the Cruise Berth

Cruise ships berth at the Channel Berth in Carrington. HV Tours coordinates pickup directly from the port -your guide meets your group at the designated meeting point and you’re on the road within minutes.

The tour runs for approximately seven hours, which fits comfortably within a standard Newcastle port call. Your guide keeps a close eye on timing throughout the day, so there’s no anxiety about getting back. Cruise passengers are a priority -the tour is built around your ship’s schedule, not the other way around.

First tasting is usually around 10am. You’ll visit several boutique cellar doors across the Pokolbin and Lovedale areas, with a sit-down lunch stop included. The afternoon brings a few more tastings before the drive back to the port.

A lush vineyard at sunset, with rows of grapevines stretching into the distance.

What You’ll See and Taste

HV Tours focuses on smaller, family-owned wineries rather than the large commercial operations. The difference is noticeable. At boutique cellar doors you’re often tasting with the winemaker or a family member who’s been working the vines for decades. The wines tend to be things you genuinely can’t find at home.

Alongside the wine, the day typically includes stops at local cheese and chocolate producers -the Hunter has some good ones -and a visit to a working winery where you can see how the wines are actually made. If your group is keen on something other than wine, a stop at a local distillery or craft brewery can be worked in.

Lunch is a sit-down meal at a winery restaurant or local eatery. It’s included as part of the tour, and the menu generally features local produce alongside a glass of Hunter Valley wine.

You might also spot some wildlife along the way. Kangaroos are often visible in the paddocks near the vineyards, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon.

Accessible Tours Available

HV Tours operates accessible vehicles with a hydraulic lifter, an automatic slide-out step, and handrails for easier boarding and disembarking. Seating is spacious, with storage for mobility aids and personal items.

Every cellar door visited on accessible tours is checked in advance to confirm it can accommodate passengers with mobility needs. If someone in your group uses a wheelchair or walking frame, let the team know when booking so the right vehicle and the right venues can be confirmed.

This is something HV Tours has built the business around since day one -the founder started running accessible wine tours after noticing there were none available in the region. It’s not an afterthought.

What to Know Before You Book

Timing: Let HV Tours know your ship’s departure time when you book. Tours are scheduled to have you back at the port with a comfortable buffer. The team monitors port schedules and will contact you if anything changes.

Group size: Tours cater for individuals through to groups of around 20. If you’re travelling with a larger group or want the day entirely to yourselves, private tour options are available.

What’s included: Pickup and return from the cruise berth, all wine tastings at cellar doors, cheese and chocolate tastings, a working winery visit, sit-down lunch, and an experienced local guide throughout the day.

What’s not included: Any wines or food you choose to purchase. Lunch drinks beyond what’s included are at your own cost.

Getting your purchases home: Any wine you buy during the day travels safely on the bus. For international passengers, it’s worth checking your airline’s liquid allowance before loading up -though many wineries can arrange shipping if needed.

A Note on Newcastle Itself

If your port call is long enough, Newcastle is worth some time before or after the tour. The harbour foreshore has been significantly redeveloped in recent years, and the city has a good food and coffee scene along Hunter Street and around Darby Street in Cooks Hill. Fort Scratchley, right on the headland near Nobbys Beach, gives you a clear picture of the harbour and a bit of local history.

That said, if you only have one day in Newcastle, the Hunter Valley is hard to beat. The city will still be there next time.
